Lithuania will destroy contraband-carrying balloons, PM warns.

Aerial device used in smuggling operations

Lithuania will begin to eliminate helium balloons carrying contraband tobacco across the border, the country's leader announced.

This action responds after unauthorized aerial incursions necessitated airport closures multiple times over the past week, affecting holiday travel, while authorities suspended frontier checkpoints during these events.

Border checkpoints will now be closed indefinitely following repeated balloon incursions.

The government leader stated, "authorities will not hesitate to employ the strictest possible measures during unauthorized aerial intrusions."

Official Measures

Outlining the strategy to media, the Prime Minister confirmed military forces were implementing "all necessary measures" to intercept unauthorized devices.

Concerning border measures, Ruginiene said diplomats will still be able to travel for cross-border diplomatic missions, and EU citizens and Lithuanians can enter from Belarus, though all other travel remains prohibited.

"This represents our clear message to foreign authorities stating that asymmetric operations face opposition within our territory, and we'll implement maximum countermeasures to halt these operations," she said.

Official communications saw no quick answer from the neighboring government.

International Consultation

Lithuania plans to consult its allies about the security challenges presented while potentially considering invocation of the NATO consultation clause - a protocol allowing member state consultation regarding security matters, particularly involving territorial protection - she added.

Flight Cancellations

National air facilities experienced triple closures during holiday periods from balloon incidents crossing the international border, impacting over hundred flights and thousands of travelers, according to Baltic News Service.

During the current month, multiple aerial devices crossed into Lithuanian airspace, leading to 30 flight cancellations affecting 6,000 passengers, per national security agency reports.

This situation represents ongoing challenges: as of 6 October, 544 balloons were recorded entering Lithuania from neighboring territory during current year, per government spokesperson comments, with nearly thousand incidents during previous year.

European Context

Additional aviation facilities - including in Copenhagen and Munich - experienced similar aerial disruptions, including drone sightings, during current period.
