A ranking policeman who rushed to the help of a colleague who was ambushed by a knife attacker received the King's Commendation for Bravery.

Sgt Tim Ansell fought with 27-year-old Jacob Brown after he held a knife to the neck of his fellow officer Sgt Marc Foster.

Brown launched his attack as the officers and their partner, PC Marcus Wolstencroft, were talking to a motorist after a road collision in Whalley Range in summer 2023.

Brown knifed and cut both Sgt Ansell and Sgt Foster prior to PC Wolstencroft incapacitated him with a electric weapon.

"Officer attacked," the officer stated over his communication device.

Bodyworn and dashboard camera footage shared by the force depicted Brown, that was clothed in black with a hood covering head, approach to Sgt Foster from the rear with a knife extended.

He ran into the policeman who tripped and fell to the street, after which Sgt Ansell jumped in and struggled to restrain him to the pavement although being multiple times hit with the weapon.

Police Constable Wolstencroft deployed his electric weapon and sought a open target, ending the confrontation to an finish.

Sergeant Ansell stated audibly: "Please provide help on my throat here, I got knifed in the neck."

Sgt Ansell suffered multiple lacerations to his throat and additional cuts to his arms and body, while Sgt Foster experienced knife wounds.

Authorities reported Sgt Foster utilized his palms to stop his colleague's blood loss before paramedics reached the scene.

The latest recognition comes subsequent to the law enforcement team received departmental Courage Honors in late 2023 and the police federation award from the area Police Federation in April 2024.

They were also awarded a Area Bravery Award in mid-2024.

"The actions of all three officers eventually saved one another and meant no bystanders endured any injuries."

Brown was sentenced to an secure medical confinement in spring 2024, according to officials.
